How to apply

If you find a job you’d like to apply for, click the Apply Online button. If you haven’t applied for a job here before, you’ll need to follow the instructions to register and set up an account with us (Why do I have to register?). Please choose an email address you use regularly, so we can easily contact you about your application.

We prefer receiving applications online, but if you are having difficulty submitting your application or require any assistance (for example, if you have a disability) please email jobs@bath.ac.uk.

All applications must be received by 12am (midnight) UK time on the closing date.

Application form

Our application form helps ensure the information you give us is provided in a consistent format, which enables us compare applications fairly. We review all applications anonymously to remove any bias and help promote diversity (personal details on the application form are hidden and documents you upload may be withheld at the initial shortlisting stage).

Complete all sections:

Our form has multiple sections, including personal information, education, employment history, and supporting statements. Please ensure you fill out all sections completely.

It's important to be detailed and provide exact dates, job titles and responsibilities as we may not ask you for your CV, or if we do, it may be withheld at the initial shortlisting stage as part of our commitment to removing bias from the shortlisting process.

Supporting statements

As part of the application process, you'll be asked to answer some questions relating to your experience. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your skills and share examples of any achievements you have which support the criteria in the person specification.

We want you to draw on your own experiences and knowledge when answering these questions. Please don’t use ChatGPT or similar tools to generate an answer for you; just be yourself.

You can complete the form in stages and can login/logout at any time. Your application will automatically save as you enter your information and it’s easy to move backwards and forwards within the form. You’ll be able to review and make changes to your application until you're ready to submit it.

References

When completing your application, you will be asked to provide details of at least two referees and to confirm if we may approach your referees before your interview. This is so that we can reduce the time it takes to offer you a position here, if you are the successful candidate.

Your referees should be people who have direct experience of your work through working closely with you. If you are currently employed, one referee should be your current line manager. The other should be your most recent employer or previous employer.

You will be asked to confirm the relationship you have to your referee within the application form.  Your referee's contact information will need to be provided - including a company email address.  Please ensure they're aware and willing to provide a reference for you. Referees should not be friends or family members.

Criminal record disclosure

We actively promote equality of opportunity for all with the right mix of talent, skill and potential and welcome applications from a wide range of candidates, including those with criminal records. You will be required to confirm if you have any unspent criminal convictions in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Any information given will be completely confidential.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily stop you from undertaking work at the University of Bath. This will depend on the nature of the offence and its relevance.

For more information, see our policy statement on the recruitment of ex-offenders. Copies of the DBS Code of Practice are available from: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service

After applying

Once you’ve submitted your application, the status in My Applications will change to ‘submitted’, alongside the date you applied. We’ll send you an email the next day confirming we’ve received your application.

After the closing date

We assign a selection panel for each vacancy we advertise. The panel will assess all applications anonymously to ensure they are reviewed fairly and free from bias. Applications will be reviewed against the requirements set out in the job description and person specification.

One of our team will contact you to let you know if you’ve been successful in getting through to the interview stage.

Hints and tips
  • When applying for a job, it's important to carefully review the job description and focus your CV to demonstrate how your experience meets the essential criteria for the role
  • Tailor your responses to the job's specific requirements and highlight relevant achievements. Remember the essential criteria is the minimum skills and qualifications needed for the role. If you find that you don't fully meet the desirable criteria, that's fine as these are perhaps things that could be picked up once you're doing the job; it shouldn't deter you from applying
  • Write in a clear and concise manner, avoiding jargon where possible
  • Proof read your application for errors and seek feedback from others
  • Address any gaps or weaknesses in your qualifications or employment history positively
  • All our adverts close at midnight on the closing date indicated. Ensure you submit your application before the deadline to avoid issues
  • Be truthful and accurate in your responses
  • We try, wherever possible to advertise the interview dates on our adverts. Make a note of this, to ensure you don't miss out

We aim to ensure transparency and a fair assessment of all candidates and recognise that different cultures may place varying emphasis on experience and skills.

When completing your application, focus on showcasing what you would bring to the role and why you are the most suitable candidate, aligning your application with the specific requirements of the position.

Right to work in the UK

If you think you may require a visa to work in the UK, you should refer to our guidance on the Skilled Worker Visa before embarking on a job application to ensure you understand the requirements for sponsorship.

You may be eligible to work in the UK via other alternative visa routes such as the Global Talent Visa or by having Settlement/Indefinite Leave to Remain. Please refer to our Staff Immigration webpages for further details

Preparing for your interview

When you receive your invitation

Please accept the invitation by using the link provided in your interview invitation, this lets us know you can attend. If you can't attend, please get in touch with the Recruitment Coordinator who emailed you, or by emailing jobs@bath.ac.uk

Let us know if you need any reasonable adjustments for the interview process, for example you may need an accessible room or additional time for any assessments involved in the interview. Please do not hesitate to ask for any reasonable adjustments.

You will be advised who the interview panel will include. It may help to find out more about the selection panel, search and find staff profiles on our website or alternatively many of our staff can be found on LinkedIn.

Preparation

Do your research. You can find contact details, locations, news, events and other information about our departments on our website.

If you would like to find out more information on the role, the advert will include a contact within the department to discuss further.

Remind yourself of the requirements of the job description and person specification. The interview panel will usually ask a series of questions linked directly to the selection criteria listed in the job description. It’s important to ensure that you meet the essential criteria of the role and bring examples of how you meet this to the interview. It is fine to take notes to the interview with you.

Be prepared with questions which you may want to ask the panel. While not essential, it's a great opportunity to find out more about the job itself, the team you may be working with and the wider University.

Check the interview arrangements

We try wherever possible to advertise the date of the interview to ensure that arrangements can be made in plenty of time. If the timings are not suitable, please contact the Recruitment Coordinator who emailed you and we can check if an alternative is available.

Plan your route. You will be provided with location information for the interview including a map of the campus and further information about public transport, parking and accessibility. Find out how to get to Bath and the University campus.

Ensure you read the invitation carefully to check what you will be asked to do, whether there will be an assessment, presentation or if you need to prepare anything in advance.

At the interview

You are likely to be interviewed by a panel of two or more people. For academic positions this may be significantly more. The invitation will let you know who the panel will be.

Typically, our interviews last between 30 to 60 minutes. The anticipated length will be confirmed within the invitation. During the interview you can expect to be asked questions to show how your experience, knowledge and skillset match the criteria of the role.

Take your time to answer each question carefully. If you need more time to answer the question, you can ask the panel to repeat the question or explain this in more detail.

Answer questions in relation to what you did personally, providing examples of your past experiences.

You'll have the opportunity to ask your prepared questions to the interview panel at the end of the interview. If there is not time, you can ask if another member of staff could answer them separately.

Clarify the next steps of the process at the end of the interview and establish when you should hear the outcome. The Recruitment Team will be in contact you confirm the outcome of the interview. If you are unsuccessful, you will be given the opportunity to request feedback,

Applying for reimbursement of your interview expenses

We appreciate that attending an interview may cost you money, and we’re happy to offer reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses or anyone travelling over a 30-mile radius of the University. For more information, please visit our reimbursement webpage.

Pre-employment

Provisional offer of employment

If you are successful at interview stage, the recruitment team will be in touch with a provisional offer of employment. Before we issue a provisional offer, we must have received at least one satisfactory employment reference. The provisional offer will be sent to you from a Recruitment Coordinator via our recruitment system. This Recruitment Coordinator will be your first point of contact throughout the onboarding process.

The offer email will outline initial details of the role including hours, salary and the terms and conditions related to the role. All offers of employment are provisional subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks. You'll need to formally accept this offer via email.

Onboarding checks

Right to work in the UK

All prospective employees are required to provide evidence of their right to work in the UK and any offer of employment is conditional on you being able to satisfy this requirement. We'll ask you to provide this evidence by:

  • providing the required documents in person (such as British/Irish passport or Irish passport card); or
  • using the Home Office Online Right to Work Checking Service (for non-British/Irish citizens).

When you're emailed your contract, you'll be given instructions on how to evidence your right to work with the University. Further information on right to work checks can be found  on our right to work webpages.

References

So that we can issue your contract to you as soon as possible it would be helpful if you could let your referees know we require a prompt response. If we don't receive your references it could impact your start date.

Qualifications

We'll ask you to provide proof of the qualifications required for the position you've applied for, as specified within the person specification. This can be in the form of original certificates or transcripts. If you require a Skilled Worker visa you'll also be asked for this as part of the visa application process.

Health questionnaire

We'll ask you to complete an occupational health questionnaire so that if you have a medical condition or need further support within your role, we can refer you to our occupational health provider for further assessment. We can then ensure that there is suitable support in place prior to your first day.

Background checks

Some of our roles involve working with children and/or adults and this will be made clear on the job advert and job description. In these circumstances we require you to complete a basic or enhanced/standard DBS check. You won't be able to start your new job until we've received satisfactory clearance. Read our guidance on applying for a DBS check.

Contract of employment

Once all checks have been received and are satisfactory, we will send you your contract of employment. This will include all terms and conditions related to your role. You will need to log into your account in order to sign this document and you can download a copy if required.
